Tom Wilson was an easel painter who occasionally designed windows for Edinburgh stained glass firm Ballantine. When his nephew, William, was unhappy at the cartography office where he was apprenticed, he helped arrange for William to be taken on as an apprentice with Ballantine. William – known usually as Willie – became one of Scotland’s top stained glass artists but told his nephew, Will, that he didn’t like Uncle Tom’s windows.
