Margaret Chilton, Manor Kirk, Kirkton Manor

Artist/Designer: Margaret Chilton

Location: Manor Kirk, Kirkton Manor

Subject: St Francis and St Margaret

Date: 1931

Photographer: Ian Lees

Chilton trained at Royal College of Art learning stained glass with Christopher Whall and Alfred Drury. In 1906 she started her own studio in Bristol but moved to Glasgow in 1918 as designer at The Abbey Studio. Later she moved to Edinburgh where she worked for many years. “I do not leave anything to an assistant: I make the design and draw out the cartoon to the last detail, plan bars and divisions, choose and cut the glass. This last is the most important of all because it is impossible for two people to see colour alike, and if the designer cuts his own glass he puts something of himself into it. I believe that all artists have a colour rhythm peculiar to themselves, as a musician has a sequence or phrase of sound”
