Hendrie trained at Royal College of Art under Professor Lethaby and worked in London in the 1920s, using the facilities at the Glass House (Lowndes and Drury) with, amongst others, Karl Parsons, Martin Travers, Wilhemina Geddes and Henry Holiday. He later became Head of the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art, teaching there for 20 years, following on from Alex Strachan. He had his own studio in the college, staffed by ex-students and postgrads, and did much to foster stained glass in Scotland. Sax Shaw was a student there and recalled the excitement of students working on the Liverpool Cathedral window in 38.
