Gabriel Loire, from Chartres in France, made very many windows in dalle de verre, lots of them in USA, where the technique is still very popular. The windows in St John’s are his only windows in Scotland. A few artists in Scotland took up this technique for a while – notably Sadie McLellan and Pluscarden Priory – and some samples of the medium were exhibited in Edinburgh in the 1960s but most Scottish practitioners were not interested in it. The subject of this window, the fall of man, is shown by the serpent that tempted Eve to eat the apple in the Garden of Eden.
