Dunfermline Abbey (November 2024, Dunfermline)

The history window depicts Wallace, Malcolm Canmore, St Margaret and the Bruce, designed by Noel Paton and made by Ballantine. It is strange to see Robert the Bruce depicted here in the act of murdering the Red Comyn, an act that was carried out in a church and must have been shocking at the time. The beautiful faces below are from a Willie Wilson window, made by his team after he lost his sight.

A Tiffany window that was rejected by the Abbey when it was first commissioned by Carnegie in 1910 had recently been installed, although sadly on a lightbox and not in a window opening where it could receive natural light. Photographs of the window during conservation were on display, showing the complexity of the underlying layers and the great variety of extravagantly rich textures of glass that Tiffany created. The design was by Agnes Northrop, who designed many of the landscape windows that came from the Tiffany studio.

These two dramatically different angels are each beautiful in their own way. Douglas Strachan’s angel is bringing Peace between east and west. After the rejection of the Tiffany window, Carnegie commissioned this in memory of his parents. The ethereal angel on the right was made by Ballantine, but designed by Noel Paton. The delicate colouring reminds one of his famous fairy paintings.
