Dunblane Cathedral (March 2024)

The last Scottish Stained Glass Symposium was held at Dunblane Cathedral on 22nd March 2024, when attendees, led by our trustee Rona Moody, enjoyed exploring the history and art of the magnificent windows.

Part of the “Allegory” window showing (from left to right personifications of the sun, the moon, the stars and the clouds and above them a row of guardian angels bearing shields and swords.

A stunning allegorical figure representing Clouds, in Louis Davis typical mature style with subtle blues and rhythmic drawing.

The “Allegory” window is one of six in the Choir that represent the Benedicite, the song which begins “All ye works of the Lord, bless ye the Lord.” They are magnificent in scale, glorious in colour and rich in naturalistic and symbolic detail. Visitors to Dunblane should take their binoculars and look for a bird feeding its young, Cain and Abel as toddlers, colourful mushrooms, a discreet memorial to Captain Scott, beautiful women, Noah’s ark, and many many fascinating details.
