McCartney studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1950-55 initially under Alix Dick who wanted him to be a painter. Traveling at the end of his first summer vacation job, however, he discovered Chartres and “La Belle Verriere” and came back wanting to do stained glass, not at that time offered as a full diploma subject. The Principal, Douglas Percy Bliss, said if another student wanted to join him he’d create a course. Sybil Clarke decided to join him and so Walter Pritchard was brought in and the MGM studios were created (Murals, Glass and Mosaics).
