Ballantine, Dunfermline Abbey

Artist/Designer: Ballantine, designed by Sir Noel Paton

Location: Dunfermline Abbey

Date: 1884

Photographer: Susan Bradbury

The central lights show the founders of Dunfermline Abbey, King Malcolm Canmore and Queen Margaret, who later became Saint Margaret. Willliam Wallace is on the left and on the right is Robert the Bruce, shown in the act of murdering John Comyn of Badenoch, nicknamed the Red Comyn. A historical murder is an unusual choice for a church window, but not unique for the shooting of Regent Moray is depicted in one of the windows of St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
