Gilfillan studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1941 – 1942 and 1947 – 1950, gaining a diploma in Drawing and Painting. At that time no student could study glass in this course, it being taught in the Design Faculty. However, “I had attended a talk on stained glass outwith College by William Wilson O.B.E, R.S.A., R.S.W, F.M.G.P, and was so impressed by the craft that he – being on the Governors of the College, managed to arrange that I study s.g., as part of my diploma course – this at my request.

He kindly allowed me to visit his studio for study and on graduating and beginning a teacher training course I was able to work full time in his studio for three months”

He became a teacher in Perthshire, carrying out several stained glass commissions in his spare time.
